From trainee to Facility Services Director: Adhurim Ahmetaj’s career path at ISS is a striking example of how a willingness to take on challenges can lead to exceptional careers.
In 2003, fresh out of school, Adhurim found himself at a crossroads: “When I was out of school without a clear plan, the open house at the building cleaning company opened up a whole new world for me,” he recalls. Initially influenced by the stigma attached to the term “cleaner,” he was surprised by the opportunities the profession offered. He decided to apply to ISS first - and was successful.
From A for “Early Years” to Z for “Goals”
Adhurim’s first day on the job in August 2004 marked the beginning of his journey at ISS. Starting with cleaning restrooms - a task that took some getting used to at first - he quickly learned the importance of dedication and professionalism. At the Aarau Cantonal Hospital, where he initially focused on restroom inspections, he gained experience that prepared him for more significant responsibilities. This period was also marked by a wide range of tasks, such as deep cleaning, window cleaning, and even cleaning operating rooms - experiences that deepened his respect for the profession and his understanding of the importance of hygiene. He quickly learns that working in facility management involves not only systematic tasks but also the ability to work under pressure and find efficient solutions to complex problems. In 2007, he successfully completes his apprenticeship and continues his career at ISS.
After graduating, this passionate weight training and fitness enthusiast faced a new challenge: his supervisor at the time, Fabrizio Musa, offered him the position of assistant property manager. Adhurim, unsure whether he was up to the responsibility, accepted the challenge and began his new role at Zofingen Hospital. There, he got to know every room in the hospital and expanded his knowledge of facility management.
Adhurim in 2010
In 2010, Adhurim completed his training as a building cleaning specialist, earning a federal certificate. In 2013, he was promoted to property manager, a role in which - with the support of his deputy and supervisor - he expanded his team from 15 to 30 people and focused intensively on personnel leadership and team management. In 2017, he began his training to become a certified building cleaner, which he successfully completed in 2019. That same year, he was promoted to site manager in the healthcare sector, where he faced new locations, clients, and challenges.
Adhurim’s career reached a new milestone in 2020 when he was promoted to Facility Services Manager (FSM). In this position, he deepened his expertise and took on the leadership of various projects and client accounts in the healthcare, cleaning, and specialized cleaning segments. “This brought new challenges, but also the opportunity to show our clients just how valuable our services and our Placemakers are,” explains Adhurim. Since January 1, 2024, he has served as Facility Services Director, implementing high quality standards for his clients. As the proud winner of the company’s internal “SwISS Team Award,” he is a central pillar of his team in the Aargau region.

He adds: “The in-depth performance reviews and the support provided through continuing education, particularly in the area of leadership, were crucial to my professional success.” He describes ISS as a company that always listens to the needs of its employees and acts accordingly. “My drive to improve and my willingness to take on any task were crucial to my career path in facility management. In my role as a manager, I often sought advice from my parents - especially my father - as well as from my mentor and my supervisors. Their words were a great source of support for me,” Adhurim says, summarizing his journey.

For those aspiring to a career in facility management, Adhurim has clear advice: “Stay steadfast; don’t question your goals. Giving up is not an option, even in difficult times.” These words reflect his own attitude and determination, which have guided him throughout his professional journey. As for his career at ISS, Adhurim is now entering a new phase. He looks forward to the challenges ahead with respect. His journey at ISS began when he was 17 years old, and he has never considered leaving since. “I had everything I needed,” emphasizes Adhurim, whose commitment to the company runs deep. He describes himself as someone with “white-and-blue blood” running through his veins. Through his experience in various roles within ISS, Adhurim has gained a comprehensive understanding of all facets of the job. “It takes time, patience, and continuous dedication to succeed in this field,” he summarizes, as he looks forward to the next steps in his career.
