The Knowledge Factory for the Ticino of Tomorrow

The USI-SUPSI East Campus in Lugano-Viganello is a place where future professionals and scientific experts are trained. Thousands of students use its modern facilities for study and research, making the campus a vibrant hub characterized by a constant flow of people. Consequently, whether for routine cleaning, specialized cleaning, or logistics tasks, high-quality service can only be guaranteed by aligning with the campus's own rhythm - and that is precisely what the ISS team has been doing since the site’s inauguration in March 2021.

The USI-SUPSI East Campus is more than just a university campus. The building impresses with its avant-garde architectural design, created by architects Luca Pessina and Simone Tocchetti. It is the answer to the desire to revitalize the urban area near the current University of Lugano campus, along the Cassarate River. The site, covering approximately 22,000 square meters, was formerly the location of the Campari factory and had been unused for many years. With the new Minergie-certified building and its 2,700-square-meter courtyard, Lugano now has a “new piazza” and a gathering place for the public - but above all, a forward-looking center for the canton’s cultural, technological, and economic development.

An Academic Microcosm

The USI-SUPSI East Campus, as the name suggests, brings together the canton’s two academic institutions under one roof: the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and the Scuola Universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI). The infrastructure is designed to support the various fields of study and includes classrooms, auditoriums, and training and research laboratories for USI’s Faculties of Computer Science and Biomedical Sciences, SUPSI’s Department of Innovative Technologies, and the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI-SUPSI), a joint institute of the two institutions.

In addition, students have access to large common areas, a multipurpose hall, an exhibition space, a cafeteria, a daycare center, and facilities for sports activities. At full capacity, the campus accommodates 1,000 students in undergraduate programs and 800 in continuing education programs, as well as workspaces for approximately 600 faculty and administrative staff.

A project we’re proud of

Sergio Morisoli, ISS Regional Director in Ticino, says: “We are proud to contribute to the smooth operation of such a renowned institution, whose goal is to train future generations of doctors and computer scientists and to promote research and innovation.” ISS, with a team of ten employees, is responsible for the routine cleaning of all interior spaces, courtyards, forecourts, and the parking garage, as well as for the specialized cleaning of facades, windows, and shutters - tasks that require a specialized approach in terms of both technique and timing due to the building’s architecture. The scope of responsibilities also includes the disposal of primary waste and logistical support for the custodial staff, for example, in setting up rooms and transporting materials.

“We have a close, synergistic relationship with ISS. For us, ISS is not just a supplier, but a true partner we can always rely on.”

ISS – A Partner You Can Count On

Support in the areas of logistics and cleaning is an essential service for numerous internal events such as celebrations, conferences, and meetings, as well as for events hosted by partners or external organizations. In these cases, ISS ensures that everything is set up and clean before and after the event, so that guests find a pleasant environment and the campus is perceived as a professional venue. The recipe for a successful event? “Open, clear, and timely communication on both sides, along with a healthy dose of flexibility,” says Livio Berardo, Head of Real Estate & Facility Management at SUPSI. This forms the foundation for the strong collaboration between ISS and Campus Logistics Management: “We have a close, synergistic relationship with ISS. For us, ISS is not just a supplier, but a true partner we can always rely on,” concludes Mr. Berardo.
