The Internet of Things (IoT) is making its way into car parks: an innovative sensor system enables parking spaces to be managed more efficiently. ISS is trialling this innovation at its headquarters in Zurich Altstetten.
Parking space is scarce and expensive, especially in downtown areas. Added to this is the growing pressure from authorities to encourage customers and employees to use public transportation. New approaches to the efficient management of parking spaces are needed. ISS is leading the way and is testing a sensor system at its Cube headquarters in Zurich Altstetten that collects valuable information about the use and occupancy of parking spaces and makes it available on the IoT platform operated by Akenza.
Sensors
Analyzing Occupancy
The battery-powered, magnetically controlled sensors send a signal via LoRaWAN as soon as a parking space is occupied. Occupancy is displayed in real time on a virtual site map. This makes it possible to determine on which days and at what times of day occupancy is highest, how long the average parking duration is, or whether a parking space is rarely or never used.
By analyzing this information, the actual space requirements can be determined and opportunities for improvement identified. In the event of underutilization, parking spaces can be leased out; conversely, when occupancy is high, additional parking spaces can be leased. In either case, this results in more economical utilization of parking areas and high user satisfaction.

Data
Better Service
In addition to collecting and analyzing information, the sensor system also opens up additional service opportunities. For example, a customer who announces their arrival via the intercom upon entering the parking garage can be quickly and easily directed to an available parking space by the reception staff. And if a particularly important guest is expected, the reception desk receives a text message as soon as the guest has parked their vehicle in the assigned spot.
“We’re confident that this innovative technology will allow us to offer our customers an exciting new service in the future. The real-world test at ISS headquarters will show us how to organize parking management more efficiently,” explains Farschid Barzegar, Business Development Manager for IoT at ISS.
